Why updates matter

Operating-system and app updates can fix security flaws, improve compatibility, and sometimes add features. Attackers may target publicly known weaknesses in software people have not updated, so postponing updates indefinitely creates avoidable risk. Updates can also introduce changes or bugs, which is why saving important work and keeping a separate backup remain sensible. A notification is only trustworthy when it comes from the device's built-in updater or the developer's official channel.

Make updates manageable

Enable automatic security updates where appropriate and schedule restarts for a time that will not interrupt work. Keep enough free storage for downloads, and connect a laptop to power before a major system update. Update browsers, office applications, and router firmware as well as the phone or computer itself. For a work-managed device, follow your organization's process rather than bypassing its controls.

Know when support ends

Check the manufacturer's support policy for devices that no longer receive updates. An old phone may still turn on, but continued use for banking or email becomes harder to justify if security fixes have stopped. If replacement is not immediately possible, reduce sensitive use and avoid installing software from unofficial sources. Before updating, verify the device is backed up and that you can still access essential accounts afterward.
