DICGC insurance generally applies to eligible deposits such as savings, current, fixed and recurring deposits at insured banks. It does not make every financial product a bank deposit: mutual funds, shares, bonds and balances held with entities outside the scheme are different instruments. Check the institution and product rather than relying on a familiar brand name.
Understand how limits are applied
Coverage is subject to a per-depositor, per-bank ceiling and aggregation rules, including how accounts held in the same capacity are combined. The applicable ceiling and treatment can change, so consult DICGC's current guide or FAQ before making a decision. Do not assume that opening several accounts at one bank multiplies the protection.
Use insurance as one factor
Compare the deposit's access conditions, tenure, premature-withdrawal rules and interest terms as well as insurance eligibility. Keep confirmations and account records, and ask the bank how it identifies insured deposits if anything is unclear. Deposit insurance reduces a defined risk; it does not prevent delays, guarantee a particular return or replace careful institution selection.
